Free family fun on Open Farm Sunday 2016
If your children love tractors and animals then Open Farm Sunday is the perfect family day out for you – and the good news is that it’s free too.
On Sunday 11th June, hundreds of farms across the country will be opening their gates to welcome the public for the twelfth Open Farm Sunday. This annual event, organised by LEAF (Linking Environment And Farming), offers a fantastic way for people to find out more about where their food comes from, talk to the farmers who produce it and get up close and personal with the countryside.
You can find a full list of farms taking part and search for your closest on the Open Farm Sunday website here, but these are the closest to Chester:
The Grange Farm, Mickle Trafford
The Grange Farm is home to a herd of rare breed Red Poll cattle, and also has a community kitchen garden run entirely by volunteers, over 20 acres of woodland and a small farm shop where you can buy their delicious Red Poll beef straight from the farm.
Details of events for the day will be updated closer to the time, but previous years have included guided tours of the farm and the historic Mickle Trafford Water Mill, rural crafts in Trafford Mill Kitchen Garden, bee keeping in the stackyard, and metalworking and a blacksmith display in the mill, as well as a farmers’ market with beef, eggs, cheese, jams & preserves, cakes, honey and more.
KiC visited Grange Farm last year and toured the beautiful but derelict mill, enjoyed sausages cooked by the local Scouts, planted beans, filled in activity sheets about British farming, and picked up plants, cheese, cookies and globe artichokes for a staggering 20p each in the farmers’ market.
The Grange Farm is at Warrington Road, Mickle Trafford, Chester CH2 4EB. Click here to find out more about the events planned for Open Farm Sunday.
Street Farm, Tarvin
Street Farm in Tarvin will be open from 11 am to 3 pm and promises farm tours, a chance to meet the animals, and tractor rides among other activities. Entry is free but other charges may apply.
Street Farm is at Kelsall Road, Tarvin, Chester, Cheshire, CH3 8NR. Click here to find out more about the events planned for Open Farm Sunday.
Wood Park Farm, Wirral
Wood Park Farm has 200 dairy cows plus youngstock and is the home of the University Of Liverpool vet school’s dairy farm. It will be open from 11am-4pm, with a chance to watch cows being milked, tour the farm and meet the animals.
Volunteers will be running guided farm tours, giving you the opportunity to see the baby calves, youngstock in the fields, and crops such as maize and wheat growing. There is also a viewing gallery at the front of the milking parlour where you will be able to watch milking taking place from 1.30 pm. You will also be able to hand milk Ermentrude, a life size plastic cow, and see student vets demonstrating simulated calving with Kylie and Jason!
Wood Park Farm is at Chester High Road, CH64 7TB. Click here for details about Open Farm Sunday events.
