Free science activities with Amazed by Science this half term

abslogoThis year sees the return of the fabulous (largely) free science festival, Amazed by Science, which runs in a variety of locations across Cheshire for the week of the May half term break. The festival aims to capture children’s imaginations and excite families about science in Cheshire. There are lots of events going on – see the website here for full details – but we’ve listed those taking place local to Chester below.

Monday 29th May

Nutrition science at the Zoo, Chester Zoo – What’s for lunch? Find out what it takes to feed the zoo. Creating diets for our unique animals is an importance science. Compare different animals and work out what nutrition they need. Suitable for all ages. Demo is free to attend and takes place on a drop-in basis between 10 and 11.30 am. Normal zoo admission applies. Chester Zoo is at Upton-by-Chester, Chester, CH2 1LH.

Ludicrous liquids, Catalyst – A chance for young scientists to get some hands on fun in our lab experimenting with interesting and surprising liquids. How many colours can you get in your rainbow straw, and can you make a lava lamp? Suitable for ages 5-10. Workshops at 11 am and 2 pm. Admission charge + £1.25 per person for workshop. Tickets for workshops sold on arrival only, places limited. Catalyst is at Mersey Road, Widnes, WA8 0DF.

Fantastic plastic, Catalyst – One of our most popular hands on sessions – experiment with an amazing plastic material before making it into a key ring to take home. Suitable for ages 5-16. Workshops at 12 and 3pm. Admission charge + £1.25 per person for workshop. Tickets for workshops sold on arrival only, places limited. Catalyst is at Mersey Road, Widnes, WA8 0DF.

Tuesday 30th May

abs3Essar at Port Arcades Shopping Centre – Bring your little ones to the Port Arcades Shopping Centre for fun, FREE science activities! Make a lava lamp, take part in experiments and see how to clean dirty water. Learn how to create a magnet motor using just a battery, a magnet, a screw and a wire. You use motors at home every day.  An average house will have at least 10. Can you think of some? Can you pedal a bike fast enough to power a toy car around a track ? Have a go! Two generators each power a scalextric car as they race around the track, the faster you pedal the faster it goes. Suitable for all ages. Drop in any time from 10 am to 3 pm. The Port Arcades are at 54 Mercer Walk, Ellesmere Port, CH65 OAP.

Feel the Force, Cheshire Oaks – Get hands on with science at Cheshire Oaks Designer Outlet where Urenco will be holding activities for kids to learn about how fun science can be! Meet the Urenco team and discover how everyday forces can be used to enrich uranium to become nuclear fuel. Activities will include virtual reality headsets showing the idea of enriching uranium, a hands on separation experiment, a mechanical pipework challenge and feel the force centrifuge models. Suitable for all ages. Drop in any time from 10 am to 3 pm. Cheshire Oaks is at Kinsey Road, Ellesmere Port CH65 9JJ.

Become a mad scientist at the Lion Salt Works – Embrace your inner Mad Scientist and help us celebrate the Amazed by Science Festival!  Excitement, intrigue and lots of fascinating experiments guaranteed! Free parking. Free access to large playground, butterfly garden, shop and cafe. Drop in session. £1.50 suggested donation. Suitable for all ages. Sessions at 10.30am – 1pm and 2 – 4.30pm. Lion Salt Works is at Ollershaw Lane, Marston, Northwich, CW9 6ES.

abs2Engineering experiments with cranes and lifts, Anderton Boat Lift – Get hands on at the Anderton Boat Lift! Learn all about canal cranes and experiment with gears by having a go at building a working mini crane. Understand how hydraulics work by experimenting using our kits, which will help you see the amazing power of hydraulics and understand the principles behind the Anderton Boat Lift. Suitable for ages 5-16. Drop in anytime between 11am and 3pm to take part in the activities. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Wildlife Discovery Workshop: Nocturnal Animals, Norton Priory – Discover more about the nocturnal animals found at Norton Priory Museum & Gardens with our Ranger. Investigate owl pellets, have a close up look at moths, and make a bat box for your garden. Bring a picnic lunch and remember to wear appropriate clothing and footwear. 10 am to 2 pm.
