What’s on this weekend – 13th and 14th May

What’s on for families in Chester this weekend

We’re really hoping that this amazing weather sticks around for the weekend – if it does, we’ve got ten great ideas for sunny days here (though – whisper it – we’ve got lots of ideas here for rainy days too).

tennis1**FREE! The big event this weekend is the Great British Tennis Weekend, which promises FREE tennis fun for you and the kids, plus related activities including barbecues and free swimming at David Lloyd – click here for more information.

**FREE! If tennis isn’t your thing, how about hanging out with some Vikings instead? The Chester International Living History Fayre returns this weekend from 10 am to 5 pm on both Saturday and Sunday, with Viking Chester there for at least some of the time recreating a living Viking camp. Details are a little sketchy, but it promises interactive exhibits and a great day out for all ages, and it’s FREE entry too. The Fayre takes place at the Parish Church of St John the Baptist, Vicar’s Lane/Little St John Street, Chester CH1 1SN. Click here for (slightly) more information.

**FREE! This is clearly the weekend for Vikings, because they’ve taken over Anderton Boat Lift as well. Activities over the weekend include a living Viking camp, musicians, crafts, warrior training, weapon demonstrations and a chance to try on Viking armour, culminating in a Viking battle at the end of each day. Anderton Boat Lift is at Lift Lane, Anderton, Northwich CW9 6FW and the event runs from 10 am to 3.30 pm on both days. Click here for Anderton Boat Lift’s website and here for the Facebook event page.

Saturday 13th May

playinaday**FREE! Saturday is a great day for creative kids! If yours are in Year 2 or above, head over to the King’s School in Chester for a fun-packed day during which they’ll put on a Play in a Day. Kids can choose whether to get involved with drama, dance or the technical side of the performance, or if that doesn’t appeal, they can also spend the day producing some fantastic art work; the art will be on display at the end of the day, when families return to watch the play. The event runs from 9 am to 3 pm and is free, though you need to book in advance. The King’s School is at Wrexham Road, Chester CH4 7QL – click here for more information and to book.

**FREE! The amazing new library at Storyhouse is now open, with a dedicated children’s area with a storytelling den. Usual library activities will resume next week, but on Saturday there will be special craft activities from 10 am to 3 pm, plus Storytime sessions at 10.30 am, 2 pm and 3.30 pm. Chester Library is at Hunter Street, Chester CH1 2AR.
