WayWord festival returns to Chester February 2017 half term

WayWord festival, Chester and area, Monday 20th to Friday 24th February 2017

WayWord is a wonderful festival for kids based in the centre of Chester with extra events at libraries across West Cheshire. It has a jam-packed calendar of events, with something to suit all ages and interests, plus you can save 10% when you book three or more events and enter the code WAYWORD at the checkout!

Free arts and crafts and story telling

wayword3There will be FREE drop-in art and craft activities every day of the festival, from 20th to 24th February, at Chester Town Hall and at Chester City, Lache, Neston, Frodsham, Blacon, Winsford, Northwich and Ellesmere Port libraries. The free activities run from 10 am to 4 pm at the Town Hall, and from 10 am to 12.30 pm at all other venues.

The free arts and crafts at the Town Hall will have the following themes:

Monday – Spies and Adventures Get into detective mode of by making a walkie-talkie, collect the fingerprints of your suspects, then get crafty and make a spying camera or periscope.

Tuesday – Science and Maths Blow all the minds in the vicinity by using your scientific skills…channel your inner engineer and make a marble maze or design and make a lolly-stick sculpture. Or spend a little longer and produce your own working kaleidoscope!

wayword5Wednesday – Stories WayWord wouldn’t be Wayword if it wasn’t jam-packed full of stories so today is all about storybook characters … create stick puppets, crowns for a royal story, a ‘Let’s Find Fred’ Panda mask or your own Elmer the Elephant, upcycled from a milk carton.

Thursday – Sea Songs Make your own music with a junk rock band – what will your group be called? Or be whisked away to the seaside with the perfect Lighthouse.

Friday – History Calling budding historians … Get inspired by the past and make Roman coins or Viking brooches or become an illustrator for the day and create TV characters.

Monday 20th February

10.30 am Mini-Den Building Workshop – In this workshop, Cathy Cross will show you how just a few household objects and your imaginative ideas to transform any space into the perfect hideaway – you’ll never look at a blank space the same way again! Suitable for all children who like making things and creative play, this workshop will see children creating individual mini dens. 12.30 pm Parent & Toddler Percussion Workshop – Let’s get loud with percussion, as this fun workshop gives you and your toddler the chance to drum. Teaching pre-school children the basics of rhythm and beat, this is the perfect bite-size introduction to music with hands-on learning. 1.15 pm Intro to Drumming Workshop – We are pleased to be able to bring music to WayWord with our friends from Learn to Play Live! Drop off or stay to watch your little rock star get groovy with the drums and percussion instruments for a fabulous 30 minutes, where they’ll learn the basics of beat and rhythm with some hands-on experience. 2 pm Intro to Ukulele Workshop – No ukulele required! We are pleased to be able to bring more music to WayWord with our friends from Learn to Play Live. Drop off or stay to watch your little rock star get musical with a ukulele. In this hour-long workshop, all children will be given their own ‘uke’ for the hour as they learn the notes and start to play some music. 3.30 pm Make Your Own Theme Tune Workshop – Edy Hurst is a master of theme tunes, and you can be too. Using top facts about yourself, improvisation, loop pedals, a guitar and a laptop, create a family ballad, your own anthem, or anything that pops into your head with the help of Edy. Tuesday 21st February

10.30 am Katie Steckles: Maths Workshop – Mathematician Katie Steckles is here to give you an introduction to some beautiful mathematical objects called Fractals – and you’ll get a chance to get hands-on and make your own. Use your mathematical thinking skills to put together some 2D and 3D fractals, and together we can make something pretty cool! 10.30 am Hula Hoop with Sasha – WayWord gets active as Sasha leads a fun session of hula hooping. Whether you’re a beginner or an expert, you can shake your hips and hula away. With wonderful music and expert advice, this session is perfect for energetic kids who want to master the art of hula hooping! 12 pm Ben Lyttleton: Football School – When do footballers poo? Can you play football on Mars? Why is the eagle such a popular mascot? And what is your favourite goal celebration? Join author Ben Lyttleton as he teaches you about the world through the prism of football. Age guide: 7+ (you know your kids best – this is a recommendation, not a restriction) £4

wayword71 pm Daisy Hirst: Paper Puppet Workshop – Come and join Festival Illustrator Daisy Hirst as she shows you how to make your very own Paper Puppets! Whether you want to make a scary monster, a crazy creature, or a colourful friend, Daisy will show you how to make the perfect puppet from paper and your own imagination. 2 pm Katie Steckles: Shapes – Topology is the mathematics of shapes – how they connect together in space, and what their interesting properties are. 2.30 pm Cheshire Dance Hip-Hop Workshop – This workshop is for children and young people that are interested in learning urban dance routines to their favourite pop music. All abilities are welcome, as you’ll learn hip-hop, popping and locking, break dance, and old school hip hop. 3.30 pm Frank Cottrell-Boyce & Steven Lenton: Sputnik! – Have you ever wondered what happened to the first dog in space? Would you like to find out Ten Things Worth Doing on Earth? The ever-popular best-selling author Frank Cottrell-Boyce and illustrator Steven Lenton, are here with the answers as they talk about Sputnik’s Guide to Life on Earth, the latest book from Frank. Wednesday 22nd February

10 am Play in a Day – Create a new play and perform it in one day! Use stories and characters from your real life to create an original drama, which you’ll perform on the WayWord stage. This intensive, day-long workshop for 9 to 11 year-olds will have you telling stories, playing games, creating characters and acting out your ideas. We’ll spend the day making theatre together and invite your family and friends to come and see the results at the end of the afternoon. 10 am Minecraft Coding Workshop with Kano – Join coding superheroes Kano for an afternoon of Minecraft madness! Build a computer from scratch using a simple storybook. Discover how to create incredible hacks that aren’t possible on any other version of Minecraft. Learn how to harness the power of code to make cheats and become a master builder. lff10.30 am Steven Lenton: Let’s Find Fred – Join the wonderful Steven Lenton as he draws and tells the story of his brand new moving-eyes picture book. Meet Stanley the zookeeper who every night says goodnight to all of the animals and tucks them into bed. But one night, he can’t find Fred! Where can he be? Help Stanley as he searches for the pesky panda amongst all the sights of the city…and watch Steven bring the book to life! *FREE! (except for the fruit!) 11 am to 3 pm Pedal Powered Smoothie with Health Box drop in – Healthbox CIC will be at the festival for one day only with their Smoothie bikes which children and adults can all enjoy, powering the bike by peddling to blend a smoothie using the fruit of their choice. Simply drop into the Town Hall between 11am-3pm on Wednesday 22nd February, buy your fruit from the WayWord fruit shop, jump on the Smoothie Bike and pedal, then drink and enjoy! There is no need to book for this event. Age guide: open to all.

12 pm Chitra Soundar: A Jar of Pickle and a Pinch of Justice – Come and listen to Chitra Soundar tell stories from A Jar of Pickles and a Pinch of Justice and find out for yourself if justice prevails. A Jar of Pickles and a Pinch of Justice is her second title in the Prince Veera series. Chitra draws her inspiration from India’s rich history, legends, epics and ancient texts. 2 pm Elmer – live on stage! – Elmer the patchwork elephant loves to make his friends laugh but he’s tired of being different. When he hides his true colours and tries to blend in, he discovers, with help from his friends, that he is happiest just being himself. Join Elmer on a vibrant musical safari through the jungle to celebrate everything that makes us unique. Told with a fun mix of music, song, dance and play. Adapted from the well-loved children’s book ‘Elmer’ by David McKee published by Andersen Press, this will delight younger audiences. *FREE! 4 pm Play in a Day Performance – Come and see the brand new performance from our theatremakers, who will have spent the day creating a brand new play. This event is open to all. Attendance is free, but tickets are still required – book in advance to avoid disappointment.

Thursday 23rd February

waywordyoga10 am, 11.30 am and 3 pm Yoga with Janice (Age 3-6) – Join British Wheel of Yoga Diploma teacher Janice Wong as she leads WayWord yoga sessions designed especially for children. 10 am Make Your Own Zine Workshop – Zines are self-published and handmade magazines or mini books and Heather Wilson, who is spending the week leading the craft activities at WayWord in the Town Hall, is an expert at creating them. So join Heather and learn how to make your very own zine using a mixture of folding techniques, drawing, writing and collage. 10.30 am Draw with Daisy Workshop – Ever fancied creating your very own story? WayWord Festival Illustrator Daisy Hirst is here to show you the tips and tricks to creating characters that leap off the page, straight from your imagination! 12 pm Kate Pankhurst: Great Women – Soar above the Atlantic Ocean with adventurer Amelia Earhart. March with suffragette leader Emmeline Pankhurst to get VOTES FOR WOMEN! Test your spying abilities with World War Two secret agent, Agent Fifi and meet many more amazing women who achieved remarkable things.There will be drawing, there will be dressing up and most importantly, there will be lots of inspiration to change the world! 1.30 pm Bec Hill: Pop-up Card Workshop – In this workshop, you’ll learn to make up to 3 different types of interactive pop-up cards which you can take home (or give to a loved one!). Bec will teach you the basic pop-up techniques which helped her develop the unique style of “paper puppetry” she uses on stage today. 1.30 pm Tiernan Douieb: Stand-Up Workshop – In this workshop, comedian Tiernan Douieb will show you how to reach your inner funny and put it into words and actions. Great for aspiring comics and for anyone who wants to learn the tricks of the comedy trade. At the end of the session, there will be a chance to perform your brand new comedy. 2 pm The Light House Keeper’s Lunch – Packed with live music, audience participation, and all the sights and sounds of the sea this much-loved story will be brought to life for children aged 3+, their friends and families. For lighthouse keeper, Mr Grinling, lunch is the highlight of the day. But Mr Grinling isn’t the only one who enjoys the delicious food. Some greedy seagulls keep stealing his lunch! 3 pm Daisy Hirst: Bag Printing Workshop – WayWord Festival Illustrator Daisy Hirst will help you create your very own bag. 3.30 pm Stand-Up for Children – WayWord is proud to present two comedians who not only used to be kids, but who are also experts in making kids (and their dependent adults) laugh out loud. Friday 24th February

10.30 am Leigh Hodgkinson: Are you sitting comfortably? – Leigh Hodgkinson introduces her latest beautifully designed picture book – ideal for anyone who loves to find the perfect spot to read. 11 am Infographics Workshop with Ken Wilson-Max – chicken! magazine is full of Ken’s infographics and in this 90 minute workshop, he will share the simple secrets of successful design. You will take home your own design and equally importantly, the skills to unleash your imagination in bold, simple and informative pictures. Your homework will never look the same again! 12 pm Romans on the Rampage – Crazy capers abound in Ancient Rome! Croakbag the amazing talking raven tells the hilarious story of Perilus, the boy charioteer, his unpredictable family and Tiddles, the widdling elephant who’s befriended them all. Another irresistible story for fans of David Walliams or David Baddiel, from Jeremy Strong, the original King of Comedy for young readers. Ideal to get children 7+ laughing and learning! £4

2 pm Leigh Hodgkinson’s Brand New Cbeebies Show – Leigh Hodgkinson was the art director on CBeebies’ award-winning Charlie and Lola and made her own short animations, including one that won a BAFTA. wayword1*FREE! 2 pm Lightbox Animation Workshop – This fun hands-on workshop introduces children to animated storytelling using silhouettes, based around the theme of Romans. Working in teams, the session will develop young people’s creative thinking, imagination and literacy skills, whilst simultaneously building their self-confidence, teamwork and problem-solving skills. 3.30 pm chicken! magazine with Ken Wilson-Max – If you want to be a journalist, or are just interested in stuff, then this is the event for you. Ken Wilson-Max produces chicken! magazine which brings to life the stories and features from Britain and beyond and here he will show what the world looks like from the perspective of the young citizen.
